Borderline was born out of the current economic and productive situation where a shift in materials, media, and technologies is observed across various markets. The book market is no exception, with a noticeable overlap between the tangible, traditional book and emerging e-reading technologies. Borderline's design aims to foster a peaceful harmony between these two reading mediums.
Characterized by its simplicity and vibrant colors, Borderline is a multifunctional design that caters to both traditional and modern needs. Its unique inclination allows for reading in a variety of situations, whether it's following a recipe while cooking, reading while typing at a desk, or simply storing books on a bedside table.
Constructed from laser-cut, folded, and colored steel plates, Borderline is a testament to minimalist yet functional design. Its dimensions are W 280mm X D 130mm X H 170mm, making it a compact solution for storage and space organization. The design's unique properties and strengths lie in its ability to cater to multiple needs in a market where old and new products coexist.
The design project, which started and finished in Rome in 2013, was exhibited at the Milano Design Week, Ventura Project- Zona Lambrate, in April 2014. The design process involved a careful analysis of how old and new reading supports could coexist and interact. The main inspiration for Borderline came from the television ALGOL Brionvega (1964), which had to address similar needs.
Borderline faced the challenge of combining multiple functions while maintaining a simple, minimal, and recognizable design. The production process was mindful of minimizing waste and lowering production costs. The result is a product that is not only functional and aesthetically pleasing but also environmentally conscious and cost-effective.
Borderline was awarded Silver in the A' Furniture Design Award in 2017, a testament to its innovative design and remarkable execution. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
